Deepening Australia–Thailand Economic Engagement

In 2023, I prepared the Australia–Thailand Economic Engagement Report for the Australian Embassy in Bangkok, with funding from the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Undertaken through the University of Adelaide’s Institute for International Trade, the project examined how the two countries could build a deeper, broader and more sustainable trade and investment relationship.

The starting point was a gap between the strength of our political and strategic ties and the depth of our economic engagement, particularly investment. Drawing on research and interviews in both countries, the report identifies opportunities for closer integration and the policy and regulatory barriers that prevent businesses from taking advantage of them.

I partnered with Bolliger & Company in Bangkok, whose contribution was central to the project. The team organised many of the meetings and interviews in Thailand, conducted the analysis of revealed comparative advantage and designed the report’s infographics. My particular thanks go to Dr. Rachda Chiasakul, Dr. Watcharas Leelawath and Bowornluk Thongmark for their expertise and hard work.

The recommendations begin with updating the Thailand–Australia Free Trade Agreement, which was approaching its twentieth anniversary, and addressing restrictions affecting services and investment. But trade agreements are only part of the answer. I also make the case for stronger links between regulatory agencies and business organisations, alongside greater student and professional mobility. These relationships can help turn shared interests into sustained commercial cooperation.
